There are some names that when you here, you know you’re in the Upper Murray; Nankervis, Byatt, Carkeek, Jarvis, Paton, Coysh, oh and don’t forget Whitehead! The 1903 Federal Electoral Roll was the first list of the Upper Murray that included females and residents that did not own land. This list was used to create a snapshot of the surnames of the Upper Murray in 1903. Surprisingly there were over 460 surnames, so to ensure names could be read, it was compared with other historical sources to develop this tea towel that reflects the history of the Upper Murray. The 1903 Australian Electoral Roll did not include African, Asian, Polynesian or Indigenous people. Some names are also missing due to not being British subjects. A cross has been added to signify the mark or signature of those without a voice.
Jim Simpson, a Nariel farmer, created a rug of international significance that is proudly displayed in the Man from Snowy River Museum. It is remarkable that a rug made in a Prisoner of War camp from scraps of wool and hand made knitting needles, so detailed and perfectly made, is The reverse side of this card has a short description of how a map of Australia with only Corryong marked came to be made.
The Corryong State School is the pride of the town. Many generations of children attended the school and fondly remember this iconic building. This book, first published in 2003, by Bob Kaighin and Betty Lebner, contains letters, photos and stories of the school from 1877 to 1952. It includes a school roll of students during this time (with some errors or missing names) and a list of those that served in the major war. A wonderful book of how a school grew and changed throughout the years.
Corryong celebrated its 150th Anniversary with community creativity at its heart.
Volunteer artists captured scenes of our past, blending old and new to honour the pioneers of the Upper Murray. Local born, Brendan Lloyd wove history together—placing the region’s legendary bullockies front-and-centre, set against the backdrop of Corryong’s first chemist and Playles’ first building.
Shifting shadows and evolving backgrounds create a striking visual symbol of passing time, settlement growth, and enduring strength. The artwork pays tribute to the critical role bullock teams played in early township supply, farming expansion, and the mining economy, hauling ore, equipment, timber and vital goods across extreme terrain when distance was our greatest adversary.

Dr. Greenham is remembered for his generousity and skills as a experienced, thoughtful doctor.
Written by Dr Greenham’s great nephew, Michael Greenham, this book tells the story of the man who shaped our hospital and ensured the people in this remote area were cared for during sickness and disaster. Dr. Greenham’s home and surgery, now used as the Baptist Church, was where he treated Upper Murray locals and, with his wife Amelia, became a much loved member of the community involved in many volunteer organisations. A fasinating read of a key character of the Upper Murray.

When I think of Corryong, I often imagine this scene today. Standing outside IGA chatting with locals and looking over the street to see the Op shop, Roger C Brown and Memorial Hall. This artwork was created by overlaying a modern photo with one of the historical photos by Arnold Playle. It is made of deleux paper with a gloss finished. It’s size is A5 (21. x 14.8 cm). The reverse has a description of the artwork, mentioning Roger C Brown, once the Coffee Palace, Playle’s Stationary Store, until recently Rubys and not Corryong’s Craft store and a short description of the importance of this area in the Upper Murray.
