Sports, Recreation and Events

The Upper Murray is known for its stunning, unique landscapes. Our community love the outdoors and due to our remoteness have learnt to entertain ourselves. Bushwalking, fishing, football, cricket, skiing and horse riding are still very popular.
The Upper Murray Football league was established in 1893. Until recently, we had the unique situation where two football teams, Federals and Corryong, had their clubrooms a few metres apart.
Some of the earliest horse races in the district were at Findlay’s Flats between Towong Hill Homestead and Bringenbrong Bridge in the mid 1850’s. In 1871, races were first held on the Towong – Corryong Rd, the finishing post being a 6 foot high grey stump on the Corryong side of the Towong School. The Towong course was then shifted to its present site on Crown land.
The Nariel Folk Festival is a popular attraction in the Upper Murray. Since 1962 music lovers have flocked to enjoy a week of music and good entertainment along the banks of Nariel Creek.
Corryong is situated 100km from Mt. Kosciuszko and the ski fields. The museum displays a unique collection of early 20th-century snow skis, including some of the original fence paling skis, a pram with skis and competition skis.
