Services and Businesses

The Upper Murray major centre began in Tintaldra, however due to a difficulty to expand the township, the town of Corryong gradually grew and is now the current epicentre of The Upper Murray. Due to our isolation the services and businesses are of great importance to our community.
In the early days many goods were delivered to settlers by hawkers and fresh produce obtained from the market gardeners in Thowgla. Constructing a train line from Tallangatta to Corryong began in the 1910s. This project never reached Corryong, finishing about 15km short at Cudgewa. It was an important service to transport cattle to Melbourne sales and people to the closest major Centre of Albury - Wodonga.
The Upper Murray was without a public hospital until 1916. The community fundraised to construct the building. In this small community they raised enough to open the hospital without any debt. Other important services include The Memorial Hall, Swimming Pool and Emergency Services. Our churches have also been a great comfort to the community.
The Upper Murray businesses have evolved over time; from saddlers and blacksmiths to electronics and supermarkets. One constant has been the local newspaper, The Corryong Courier.
